>> A shock loss for Serena Williams, effectively costing her the women's number one tennis title she's held for three and a half years. The American crashing out of the US Open semi-finals for the second straight year on Thursday night. Losing to Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. Williams could only blame herself for the moment she lost to double faulting on match point to give her opponent the win in straight sets.
For now at least the lose stops her from moving past Steffi Graf as the greatest grand slam champion of the professional era. Serena's been having knee trouble since earlier in the tournament though that didn't stop her from crawling her way back from three-love down in the second set to take a four-three lead.
But Pliskova refused to buckle earning a win that makes her only the fourth woman to beat both Williams sisters in the same competition. Next up she'll battle it out with Angelique Kerber in the final on Saturday. The second seeded German all but guaranteed to Serena's long held number one spot.
