>> A cold and scary night for dozens of people trapped on a cable car in the Alps. The drama began mid afternoon when the Mont Blanc Gondola system ground to a halt. 110 people caught up in the drama. By nightfall, more than half of those stranded had been got back to earth by helicopters or mountain rescue teams.
>> We were there almost ten hours on the cable car, the cables failed about 2:30 in the afternoon and it was just before midnight when they finally blade us out of the Gondolas, which was really quite an experience. The helicopter rescue failed because the fog moved in.>> Those still on the cable car at nightfall were in for a tougher time.
Rescuers deciding it was too dangerous to get them out in darkness. That left 45 people stranded until dawn. They were finally rescued shortly after first light. Now investigators are trying to work out why the system ground to a halt. Cables getting tangled in three different places. The Mont Blanc operator says that can happen in high winds or when the system makes a sudden stop.
