>> Investigators on Monday began to assess what exactly caused a helicopter crash in New York City Sunday night, that killed five people. Only the pilot survived.>>

This video taken by a bystander and posted on Twitter, showed the moment the Eurocopter AS350 plunged into the frigid waters of Manhattan's East River.>> Somebody climbed out of the helicopter and was on top of the yellow raft screaming help and waving his arms like this. And we were waving back and yelling that help was on the way.
>> The point of impact was near Rosevelt Island at about 7 PM. Two passengers were killed instantly, another three were taken to local hospitals and later died. Officials say the pilot managed to free himself from the crash.>> The pilot is okay, he was taken to the hospital to be checked out but he was able to get out.
It took a while for the divers to get these people out. They worked very quickly as fast as they could. That's 50 feet of water there. There was a four mile an hour current and the temperature was below 40.>> Officials say the passengers were tightly harnessed. Those harnesses had to be cut and removed to pull them free.
The chopper was registered to Liberty Helicopters, a sight seeing and charter service in New York. And was on a private charter photo shoot.
