>> At least two people were killed in a helicopter crash in New York City Sunday. Officials say the aircraft was flying over the East River with at least six people on board. Video apparently taken by a bystander and posted on Twitter showed the moment Eurocopter AS350 went down.
The point of impact was near Roosevelt Island at about 7PM. Official ssay the pilot managed to free himself from the crash. The pilot is okay. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but he was able to get out. It took awhile for the divers to get these people out.
They worked very quickly, as fast as they could. That's 50 feet of water there. There was a 4 mile an hour current, and the temperature is below 40.>> A Reuters photographer saw three people recovered by divers and wheeled onto stretchers just before 9 PM. Emergency personnel were attempting to revive them but their condition is unclear.
Witnesses described a hard crash into the water and said the downed chopper was submerged within minutes.>> Someone climbed out of the helicopter and then was on top of the raft.>> Screaming help and waving his arms like this. And we were waving back and yelling that help was on the way.
>> First responders and dive teams from the city's police and fire departments immediately swarmed the scene, joined later by three boats from the US Coast Guard. The Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating the crash.
