>> They weren't exactly Medal of Honor winners.>> US President Donald Trump on Monday blasted sheriff's deputies in Parkland, Florida for what he called their, quote, disgusting response to the deadly massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School nearly two weeks ago. Speaking at a meeting of the nation's governors, Trump named at least one person who would've done the job better, him.
>> I really believe I'd run in there, even if I didn't have a weapon.>> Broward County Sheriff, Scott Israel, is facing mounting criticism for his deputies' handling of the shooting, the biggest ever at a US public high school, with dozens of Republican state lawmakers calling for his ouster and Governor Rick Scott ordering an independent inquiry.
Israel has insisted that only one of his armed deputies is so far known to have been at fault for staying outside the school while it was under attack. That deputy, the school's assigned Resource Officer, Scot Peterson, has resigned. Peterson on Monday said through his attorney that his actions were, quote, appropriate under the circumstances, explaining that he believed the gunshots were fired from outside the school buildings.
With classes at Stoneman Douglas set to resume this week, hundreds of students returned to campus Sunday for the first time since the massacre. Part of a phased reopening to pick up backpacks and other belongings and help them in the long process of healing. They were greeted by 17 people dressed as angels, 1 for each victim, along with flowers, notes, and hugs.
>> Coming back here is hard cuz I lost some of my friends->> The three-story building where the shooting took place remained cordoned off and closed.
