>> An attempted coup is underway in Turkey. Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said a group within Turkey's military is attempting to overthrow the government. Security Forces have been called in to quote, do what is necessary. In a statement Friday, the Turkish military saying it had taken over. One witness telling Reuters gun shots were heard in the Turkish capital of Ankara as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead.
Helicopters also reportedly spotted over Istanbul, Turkey's biggest city. Video online shows soldiers lining the streets telling residents to go home. As the situation unfolds, the prime minister is calling for calm and said quote, the government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so.
Both of Istanbul's bridges across the Bosphorus, the strait separating the European and Asian sides of the city, had been closed to traffic. It was not immediately clear if the events were related.
