>> At least 20 people killed after a train crash in southern Italy. Dozens injured as two passengers trains collided head on in the middle of an olive grove. The accident happened on a single stretch of track in the countryside between the towns of Corato and Andria in the region of Puglia.
The local mayor saying it looked like there'd been a plane crash. Three carriages torn apart by the violence of the impact, debris littered on either side of the track.>>
> I want to express my condolences to the families. And I have ordered with no holding back to find who was responsible for what's happened.
I think absolute clarity must be made on this. We will not stop until we understand what happened. Now is the time for tears and commotion. And in these hours, the rescue is ongoing.>> Working in fierce summer heat, the firemen opened up carriages to search for further victims, also using a crane to see if there were bodies trapped underneath.
A spokesman said they had managed to save a child from the wreckage. Authorities appealing for blood donors to go to local hospitals. So far there's been no reason given for the crash or why the trains were on the same track. Two investigators are looking into to what might've caused it.
Italian media said the European Union had earmarked funds to build a second track along the route but that work had been delayed.
