>> Intense fighting in and around the Syrian city of Aleppo, rebels beginning an offensive Monday to retake a key supply route. The Castello Road has been seized by government forces, effectively cutting off the rebel-held parts of the city. These amateur pictures showing the aftermath of what locals say was a Russian air strike.
Tankers and other supply trucks hit just west of Aleppo. One man described what happened.>>
> We heard the plane at 9 AM this morning, and then it started firing missiles, and it hit seven or eight times.>> Aleppo residents contacted by Reuters say the price of food and fuel is soaring as supplies run short.
The situation unlikely to get any easier with the city seen as a key prize for both sides. Aleppo is Syria's largest city and was once its commercial hub. After six years of war, much of it, including historic world heritage sites, lies in ruins.
