Volkswagen is being sued by the U. S. securities and exchange commission , you need to say the automakers should have told them earlier about the scale of its emissions cheating scandal V. W. is cool using illegal software to cheat US pollution tests in twenty fifteen the ensuing scandal has so far cost nearly thirty three billion dollars in fines and other measures in it suits the SEC focuses on V. W. bonds issued in twenty fourteen and twenty fifteen , it says the firm sold thirteen billion dollars of debt as a time when it knew it was cheating on U. S. tests the SEC says V. W. repeatedly lied to investors consumers and regulators as part of issuing the bones , in a statement the German firm called the accusations legally and factually floor it says it did not have to inform investors about the diesel cheating as it then I had no idea the scandal would prove so costly , documents in a similar German case reveal V. W. forty missions issue could be fixed with a quick software patch it estimated the potential financial impact is around one hundred and seventy million dollars the real cost about two hundred times higher and counting
