Washington state governor Jay Inslee announced Friday he is running for president on a single issue , we need to defeat climate change , the sixty eight year old is the first governor in a field full of senators vying for the chance to challenge president Donald Trump in twenty twenty he's up against big names such as Bernie Sanders Elizabeth Warren many contenders include tackling climate change as part of their platforms but Inslee will make it front and center we're the first generation to feel the sting of climate change they were the last they can do something about it he has a strong following among environmentalists and financial support from a newly formed environmental political action committee scientists link recent catastrophe such as the California wildfires and hurricanes in Texas and Florida to man made global warming and the disasters have made the threat of climate change tangible to many Americans but still in a recent Reuters poll only about fifteen percent of respondents said climate change would motivate them to vote in an election Insley spent fifteen years in Congress before being elected governor in twenty twelve and in twenty sixteen he won re election to a second four year term
