I am also a military sexual assault survivor senator Martha make Sally on Wednesdays stunned a Senate hearing on the military's response to sex abuse revealing that she had been raped while serving in the military the perpetrators abuse their position of power in profound ways , and in one case I was preyed upon and then raped by a superior officer make Sally who was the first female combat pilot in the U. S. Air Force before turning to politics said she did not report the assault because she did not trust the system I almost separated from the Air Force at eighteen years , or my despair , like many victims , I felt the system was raping me all over again , her testimony comes months after I was senator Joni Ernst and army veteran disclosed in an interview that she had been sexually assaulted in college by someone she knew I think every survivor should have the right to decide when it's their time to tell a story and when it's not their time to tell a story we must fix those distortions in the culture of our military that permit sexual harm towards women and yes some men as well make Sally served two terms in the US house before being appointed in December by the state's governor to take over the late John McCain's Senate seat and I'm honored by this appointment
