In an early morning tweet storm, Trump claiming the inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess, offering no evidence.

And calling Mueller's investigators a disgrace to our nation. The outburst coming a day after Democrat Chris Coons and Republican Jeff Flake launched a bipartisan effort. To force a vote on a Senate bill shielding Mueller's job.>> The justification given in April for not bringing it to a floor vote was that nobody was being fired.

Special Counsel Mueller was not in any danger, that clearly is not the case now.>> This after President Trump fired Jeff Sessions last week and appointed a loyalist, Matt Whitaker, as acting Attorney General. Placing him in charge of Mueller's ongoing Russia probe, Trump's move provoking a national uproar.

Amid fears Whitaker might try to undermine Mueller's investigation or shut it down. The Senators defying Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who blocked a vote on the bill on Wednesday.>> I mean, there's been no indication that the Mueller investigation will not be allowed to finish and it should be allowed to finish.

>> I think it's in no danger and so I don't think any legislation is necessary.>> Flake saying he won't vote to confirm Trump's judicial nominees on the Senate floor until there's a vote.>> This is something that, as my colleague has said, deserves prompt attention on the floor.

>> The push by Coons and Flake comes as the Department of Justice issued a defense of Whitaker's appointment. The DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel saying the move was consistent with the Consitution. Critics say rather than Whitaker, Trump should have put in charge Sessions' Deputy Rod Rosenstein. Who had been overseeing Mueller's probe.

>> So it wasn't as if they just leap frogged over the Deputy. They took this investigation from him and gave it to somebody who has not received Senate confirmation. That does not seem constitutional to me.>> Mueller is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election. And possible collusion with the Trump campaign, a charge Trump and Russia deny.

The Senate bill was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee back in April, and is backed by Democrats. The Senate bill would ensure Mueller would only be fired for good cause. And would allow him to challenge any dismissal in federal court.>> He is the subject
