Ross Perot the feisty self made Texas billionaire who shook up American politics twice running for president as an independent has died after a battle with leukemia he was eighty nine his family says he died early Tuesday at his home in Dallas surrounded by family I have lived the American dream the son of a cotton broker Perot made his fortune as a ground breaking entrepreneur in the computer data processing industry but he was best known for his two presidential runs in the nineteen nineties that struck a chord with disgruntled voters I got a white one the folks the independent and master salesman quickly found support among Americans turned off by the Republican and democratic parties I want these young people appear to be able to start with nothing but an idea like idea and build a business is outsider campaign mostly finance with his own money advocated for cutting the national debt and fighting trade deals such as nafta Perot finished with the respectable nineteen percent of the vote in nineteen ninety two when Democrat Bill Clinton beat out incumbent George H. W. bush for his nineteen ninety six White House run Perot started the Reform Party captured little more than eight percent of the popular vote Perot is also known for using his fortune on behalf of P. O. W.'s and US soldiers missing in action Perot is survived by his wife and five children
