in the midst of pride month and ahead of the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall uprising comes a long overdue apology the American psychoanalytic association on Friday said it was sorry for previously treating homosexuality as a mental illness saying it's past errors of fuel discrimination and trauma for LGBTQ people the A. P. S. A. A. as it's known maybe the first U. S. medical group to issue such an apology although psychiatrists declassified homosexuality as a disorder in nineteen seventy three and psychologist came around nearly twenty years later the group says it does not know of any related organization to have publicly expressed contrition the change in the medical community is thinking about homosexuality and Fridays apology stem from the seminal event at stone wall when patrons of the New York City gay bar fought back against police harassment in the early morning of June twenty eighth nineteen sixty nine triggering the start of the modern gay rights movement New York city's current police commissioner recently apologized for the raid and the discriminatory laws at the time well I'm certainly not going to stand up here and pretend to be an expert on what happened at stone wall , I do know what happened should not have happened , the actions taken by the NYPD were wrong , plain and simple , the actions in the laws were discriminatory and oppressive and for that I apologize New York is expecting as many as four million people for the fiftieth anniversary of stone wall next week
