whose people judge what he's right now the hottest thing the Democratic Party he is the thirty seven year old mayor of south bend Indiana and he's got the momentum right now he's got poll numbers that are searching he's got money that's coming in and he's getting %HESITATION the lion's share of media attention right now among the more than dozen candidates the democratic presidential field I'm James Oliphant political correspondent for Reuters but a judge is going to watch his campaign formally in south bend on Sunday expect a lot of talk about economic development in the town about how he turned the town around how he is a a middle class guy with midwestern values as he likes to say he wants to take those values and his style %HESITATION to the national level and everybody brings the experiences they have in mind is one of the executive government government leadership in challenging times in addition to military experience it is time for this generation to be putting forward more leaders by the way %HESITATION but a judge or mayor Pete as most people call and has been building momentum is largely through media appearances this whole thing started with the town hall that he had on scene and a couple of months ago and since then he has been %HESITATION nearly everywhere he's been ubiquitous in the media and he's been showing up %HESITATION in his diverse places is the New York Times and wired magazine everybody it seems like they want to take here from there's Pete and that's gone a long way to building his national profile , but a judge is the first openly gay major presidential candidate in history and add a gay rights event in Washington %HESITATION last week he brought that packed up and basically took issue with vice president Mike pence is also from Indiana my marriage to Chastain has made me a better man , and yes Mr vice president it has moved me closer to god I bought a judge's also religious he speaks about his faith on the trail and speaking only for myself , I can tell you that if me being gay was a choice , it was a choice that was made far far above my pay grade yeah basically he was criticizing pants for being a hypocrite saying that it you know evangelical Christians like pants with support Donald Trump don't support people liked him %HESITATION are basically not %HESITATION adhering to scripture and that's the thing I wish the Mike pence is the world would understand , if you got a problem with who I am your problem is not with me your quarrel Sir is with my creator well mayor pain is already caused a great deal and that is he's put himself into the same conversation with more experienced politicians that's the first step for people to judge the second step is to try to distinguish himself from these other contenders and so what he has to do now is sort of develop that independent message a way to sort of jump out of the pack and get into that absolute top tier of democratic contender
