Irish singer Sinead O'Connor has converted to Islam. The artist, who is best known for the hit, Nothing Compares 2 U, announcing the news on Twitter. O'Connor also revealed a change of name, now choosing to go by Shuhada Davitt. The singer has spoken of her difficulties with bipolar disorder.
In 1992, she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a television appearance on Saturday Night Live. At the end of 2015, O'Connor announced on Facebook that she had taken an overdose in Ireland, but was later found unharmed. A few months later, she went missing after going for an early morning bicycle ride in the Chicago suburbs.
She thanked her Muslim brothers and sisters for welcoming her into the faith on Friday.
