He's been a detective, a Norse god, and a drug kingpin. But now Idris Elba can boast a new role, sexiest man alive. The 46-year-old British heart-throb was given the title by People magazine on Monday, joining the ranks of Thor co-star Chris Hemsworth, George Clooney, and Adam Levine. The magazine says when they told Elba about the win, he didn't believe it.
He told them it was, quote, a nice surprise, an ego boost for sure. On Monday, he thanked the publication and fans but used his time in the spotlight to encourage people to go out and vote in the midterm elections. His win makes him one of only three non-white men to receive the honor since 1985.
Denzel Washington made the cut in 96, and Dwayne The Rock Johnson two years ago. One of Britain's best known stars, Elba won a Golden Globe for his lead role in BBC series Luther and fans are campaigning for him to be the next James Bond. In August, he fanned flames by posting a cryptic tweet, my name's Elba, Idris Elba, but shut down rumors just days later.
