>> Boston's most notorious mobster is dead. James Whitey Bulger was reportedly killed in a federal prison in West Virginia on Tuesday. Bulger, who was 89 and serving a life sentence, was found dead at the high security Hazelton Federal Prison, where he was recently transferred. The infamous mob boss and one-time FBI informant had been living as a fugitive for 16 years, before he was captured in June of 2011 in Santa Monica, California, where he was living with his longtime girlfriend.
Items seized from his apartment were auctioned off and raised more than $100,000 to compensate victims' families. Bulger was convicted in 2013 of 11 murders and sentenced to 2 consecutive life terms plus 5 years. Actor Johnny Depp portrayed him in a 2015 movie called Black Mass. Bulger and his violent gang had operated for more than 20 years in the Irish-dominated South Boston neighborhood during the 70s and 80s.
