]>> Here's a Christmas tradition unique to the UK, this meat auction. Where you can bid on English pork, beef, or turkey just ahead of Christmas dinner.
Before the tables are set it's a last minute chance to get a bargain. Traditionally on Christmas Eve London Smithfield Meat Markets have held an auction. And according to organizers it's a tradition that's been going for 150 years.
Market Chairman Greg Lawrence has been running it for 40 years. He says there's over 16 tons of premium meat for sale, all at a discount.>> There beside me 50, 60% are buying at this auction compared if they're gonna buy out in supermarkets and other butcher shop. And it's all quality, quality product, all quality product.
>> It's definitely an alternative way to do your Christmas grocery list.>> The auctioneer and all the other people are helping to feed all the meat through. Just great fun and it's really entertaining and yeah.>> It's a lot better than going to Tesco and buying it at a supermarket.
>> Yeah.>> You might as well have fun doing it so yeah.>> Most customers have cash at the ready, but Lawrence lets bidders play their chances on the toss of a coin. A prime cut of meat could be yours for free, but only if you guess heads or tails correctly.
