>> A federal judge in Texas striking down Obamacare, ruling it unconstitutional. US district judge Reed O'Connor in Fort Worth agreed with the Republican-led coalition of 20 states who brought the lawsuit. US President Donald Trump speaking to reporters Saturday called it a great ruling for our country.>> And on the assumption that the Supreme Court upholds, we will get great, great healthcare for our people.
I'll have to sit down with the Democrats to do it, but I'm sure they wanna do it>> While the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare in 2012 based on Congress' right to set taxes, last year Congress reduced the penalty tax for not having health insurance to zero. The judge ruled that without Congress supplying a tax, the individual mandate is now unconstitutional.
And therefore the entire law is unconstitutional. The 2010 law was the signature domestic policy achievement of former US president Barack Obama. Republicans have opposed the plan since its inception and have repeatedly tried and failed to repeal it.>> The rates are going through the sky->> O'connor, a judge appointed by George W Bush announced his decision just a day before the end of the sign up period for 2019 health coverage under the law.
Government officials say Friday's ruling will not have any immediate effect. But the decision almost certainly will be appealed and could make its way to the Supreme Court. Where the landmark health law could be struck down, threatening the healthcare of nearly 12 million Americans.
