>> 60s supermodel Twiggy along with actors Thandie Newton, Sophie Okonedo and Michael Palin have been recognized in Britain's Queen Elizabeth's, New Year's Honors List. They join authors Philip Pullman and The Handmaid's Tale writer, Canadian Margaret Atwood. She receives a Companion of Honor for Services to Literature. That's the same award given to Harry Potter author JK Rowling last year.
The biannual honors list includes a damehood for model Lesley Lawson, better known as Twiggy. She was one of the defining faces of the swinging 1960s. Emmy winning actor Thandie Newton gets an OBE for services to both film and charity. Also Sophie Okonedo was recognized for drama. A knighthood goes to former Monty Python actor and broadcaster Michael Palin and Philip Pullman whose books include the His Dark Materials trilogy also receives a knighthood.
The author said it was a huge surprise and a great pleasure to be honored, initially believing it to be a hoax. The New Year's Honors have been awarded since Queen Victoria's reign in the 19th century. They aim to recognize not just well known figures, but those who've contributed to national life through often selfless and unsung contributions.
