your brood prevent anymore children from falling ill with this danger disease I am today declaring a county wide state of emergency drastic measures are being taken in a New York suburb fighting devastating measles outbreak as of Wednesday in Rockland county anyone under the age of eighteen who has not been vaccinated will be banned from public places like stores schools and houses of worship here in Rockland county we have now ended I twenty six the week of this measles outbreak this is nearly six months of investigating cases holding clinics and giving vaccinations measles is a highly contagious virus in can have serious consequences like brain damage hearing loss and even death according to the US centers for disease control and prevention in Rockland just north of New York City there have been one hundred fifty three confirmed cases of measles mostly among children who haven't been vaccinated officials say the outbreak began in October when in unvaccinated resident became infected while visiting Israel and came back with the disease the Rockland announcement follows measles outbreaks in California Illinois Texas and Washington and as part of a global resurgence of the viral infection according to the CDC as for Rockland county it's band will last until the declaration expires in thirty days or until unvaccinated people get their shots
