shares of tech giants Facebook Google parent alphabet and Amazon took a dive Monday all reports the US is preparing to ratchet up oversight of silicon valley's most powerful companies sources familiar with the matter told Reuters the department of justice is considering a probe into whether Google engages in anti trust practices by favoring it's all businesses in search results and sources tell Reuters exclusively the DOJ could look at apple as well as part of a broad antitrust review of the tech industry meanwhile the Federal Trade Commission will spearhead investigations of Facebook at Amazon according to two separate media reports Facebook has already been under the watchful eye of the FTC for over a year of possibly violating privacy issues and now according to the Wall Street journal the FTC may begin looking into whether the world's largest social media network also engages in anti competitive behavior Amazon is also under the FTC spotlight according to The Washington Post but the subject of that possible probe was not immediately clear what is clear is the outrage Amazon has sparked from companies who place their products on the world's biggest online retailer only to see similar Amazon made products offered at a lower price the European Union is already conducting a preliminary probe into complaints Silicon Valley scrutiny has been steadily growing on both sides of the political aisle claiming the industry has become too big and powerful and for its role in spreading hate speech and misinformation senator Elizabeth Warren a Democrat running for the White House has gone as far as the call for the break up of big tech companies
