it was set up to look and sound like a night club dancers all lost in the beat until the music stopped , Hernandez with recent performances at new York's Guggenheim in this sculptural installation at the Whitney biennial says his art examines social spaces freedom resilience and sanctuaries for the queer community the questions the dance floor %HESITATION post %HESITATION Orlando or foreign people fell to the floor and in the the dance club and so we dance and solidarity and we also interrupt the space of the of the music and so we have forty nine stocks , and that's when it stops we fall to the ground and stayed in silence to give memorial to those queers but also we stand up to create resistance to create social solidarity in a political gesture standing %HESITATION and then continue to dance to dance even as the threats persist , the Smithsonian event came just a day after crowds it DC's pride parade were sent running in panic after some thought they heard gunshots , it turned out to be a false alarm but took very Nando's the incident underscores the relevance of his art during this pride month around the world I was running I was confused I didn't know and afterwards I was you know thinking about the residue of what that meant to this piece it means that we're still in a place of questioning a space that were not fully free but not fully safe this year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York City widely regarded as the birthplace of pride and a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ plus rights movement , fifty years on activists say their fight is far from over
