the internal watchdog for the US department of homeland security has urged officials to take immediate steps to alleviate what it calls dangerous overcrowding after it found extremely poor conditions at the el Paso del Norte border patrol facility in Texas writers Michael Rosenberg has the story the inspector general for the department of homeland security did a series of site visits at a border patrol facility in el Paso and there they said they were dangerous conditions of overcrowding %HESITATION they found hundreds of migrants packed in cells %HESITATION meant for much fewer people sometimes people were in standing room only conditions some people are waiting in the bathroom %HESITATION because there wasn't enough room in the actual holding cells and they also found families being held outside in parking lots a really a dire situation in that center rotors photos taken last month showed similar conditions at another border patrol facility in McAllen Texas with adults and children sleeping on the ground outside in the parking lot US officials say they have been overwhelmed by tens of thousands of mostly central Americans crossing into the U. S. and turning themselves over to border agents there are a lot of factors that have led to this current surge of central American families immigrant advocates have said that one of the problems is that many asylum seekers trying to enter legally at ports of entry and a trump administration policy has been to limit the number of people who can present themselves each day and so a lot of migrants have been released in large groups %HESITATION and just on Wednesday a group of over a thousand migrants were apprehended by border patrol agents at which is the largest group ever %HESITATION groups at that size are really difficult for the border patrol to handle last week president Donald Trump threaten Mexico with terrorists to do more to stop the flow of migrants at the southern border Mexico's economy men , stir in the U. S. commerce secretary were set to meet in Washington on Monday ahead of scheduled talks in the coming week between the two governments to resolve the issue
