>> Federal employees going without pay silently protested on Capitol Hill Wednesday, as the longest shutdown in US history marches on. Workers affected by the shutdown gathered in the Hart Senate Office Building to stand silently for 33 minutes, one for each day their agencies have been operating without government funding.
President Trump's demand for $5.7 billion for his border wall has caused Washington to grind to a halt with neither side budging. And the tactic is not a popular one. A CBS poll out Wednesday finds 71% of Americans don't think the wall is worth shutting down the government over.
And neither does Democratic House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, who on Wednesday vowed to stand firm against Trump's demands.>> There is serious and justified concern that this President would shut down the government any time he does not get his way legislatively. That is why we must hold the line on this shutdown in government.
.>> The hundreds of thousands of affected federal workers are struggling to make ends meet.>> We drove an hour and 20 minutes just to get some food, cuz we're not getting paid.>> Many are turning to unemployment assistance, food banks, or GoFundMe accounts. Others began seeking new jobs altogether.
>> Fund the FBI now.>> The FBI Agents Association said on Tuesday that investigations of possible financial crimes, drugs, and terrorism were being hindered by the lack of funds.>> Motion to proceed->> In a somewhat long-shot effort to end the stalemate, on Thursday the Senate will vote on two opposing bills.
One would include border wall funding and temporary relief for Dreamers. The other, backed by Democrats, would temporarily fund the government but include none of Trump's wall demands. But both bills seem at this point destined to fail. The number three House Democrat on Wednesday floated the idea of ending th shutdown by giving President Trump the money he seeks but for border security not a wall.
House majority whip James Clyburn told reporters that Democrats could fulfill Trump's requests with a, quote, smart wall that includes drones, X-rays, sensors, and more border patrol agents.
