after months of finger pointing the trump administration has made it official it will formally notify Russia that the United States is withdrawing from a Cold War era nuclear treaty over what the administration says are violations by Moscow it's called the intermediate range nuclear forces treaty and it restricts missiles capable of striking Europe on short notice Russia has jeopardized the United States security interest and we can no longer be restricted by the treaty wall Russia shamelessly violates , if Russia does not return to full and verifiable compliance with the treaty within the six month period by verifiably destroying its I. N. F. violating missiles their launchers and associated equipment the treaty will terminate , this was Russia's very public attempt to prove that it's cruise missile system doesn't violate the arms treaty but last week's televised demonstration clearly hasn't had the desired effect the US says the system isn't compliant because of its long range and has accused Russia of destabilizing global security by refusing to destroy it Moscow maintains that Washington invented the violation in order to exit the agreement something that would allow the United States to develop its own new missiles last ditch talks in Beijing failed to resolve the impasse
