As the race to develop artificial intelligence gains momentum, the US and China have taken the lead. According to a study by the United Nation's published Thursday, US tech giants IBM boasts the biggest AI portfolio with nearly 9,000 patents. Microsoft falls right behind with nearly 6,000. Meanwhile the reports found that Chinese companies are dominating the fast growing area of deep learning, a technique that proved very powerful in mimicking humans skills.
Since it's algorithms are roughly inspired by the data processing patterns found in the human brain. China also accounted for 17 of the top 20 academic institutions, involved in patenting AI.>> They get educated at our finest schools->> But president Trump has accused China of stealing American innovations in technology, which Beijing has denied.
The reports also found that the single most popular AI application was computer vision, a technique used in self driving cars. It was mentioned in 49% of all AI related patents.
