with more people flying than ever the aviation industry is booming but there's one big problem in keeping up with passenger demand there's a global shortage of pilots fit to take you from point a to be such a fill those cockpits US airlines like United are regressive Lee recruiting military helicopter pilots it's transitioning all of your military rotor ratings you fly helicopter flight at a very high level you fly very complex machine in a crew coordination type environment really %HESITATION dynamic flying and we're taking those folks and we're just transitioning skills Brian Simmons is president of a pilot academy that focuses on training military helicopter pilots to fly commercial planes US airlines are now offering pilots hefty salaries to make the job more enticing mission as a mission basically in our mind set son Bettis is one of those benefiting from the pay bumps he now flies for the regional branch of United Airlines it is nice to be %HESITATION for sure like treated better in the civilian side and %HESITATION to be in demand also helps in training %HESITATION and pay there's a key reason airlines are chasing military pilots like Pat is the new FAA rules only require them to have seven hundred fifty hours of additional training half the fifteen hundred required of anyone else trying to get a commercial pilot license it also costs a newcomer a lot more time and money it can take years to obtain a license and could put you back a hundred thousand dollars which is one of the reasons for the shortage training takes a lot more time today than it used to in twenty thirteen the Federal Aviation Administration increase the number of required training hours from two hundred fifty to fifteen hundred V. , types of requirements have failed to attract the young people to fill the jobs that will soon be vacant as forty two percent of the pilots currently flying according to Boeing will reach their mandatory retirement age of sixty five over the next decade
