According to local media, footage they sold online shows the boy being tied-up, verbally humiliated and sworn at. They advertised him to be raped and abused on the Dark Web which can only be accessed using special software. The pedophile ring was allegedly operated like a business outside of town near Freiburg in Southern Germany where the couple lived.

It's believed abusers paid up to 10,000 euros each time. Six men who paid to abuse the boy have also been sentenced including one Swiss and one Spanish citizen. Others on trial include a 44-year-old German who was given access to rape the boy but prevented by the mother from carrying out his wish to kill him.

The case, which has been labeled the worst of its kind in German criminal history has triggered calls for an overhaul of Germany's child protection services. Raising serious questions over why the boy was even living with his father, who was already a convicted pedophile.
