Though originally from North Carolina, he's worked in Turkey for more than 20 years. He's been accused of helping the Gulen group that Anchorer says was behind a failed military coup in 2016. Brunson denies the charges but faces up to 35 years in jail if found guilty. The Turkish president has previously linked Brunson's fate to cleric Fethullah Gulen, whose extradition from United States has been a long held demand of Turkish authorities.
