>> A robot hand that can do what a human hand does. I'm Stephen Nellis with Reuters in San Francisco. Robot hands that look a lot like a human hand have been around for years but they haven't gotten much use because they're extremely difficult to program. That is, until some researchers from a group called OpenAI here is San Francisco started working on it.

The group was founded by Elon Musk, who's the founder of Tesla, and Sam Altman who's a well known financer here in Silicon Valley. So what they've done is they've taken about 100 years of training a robot hand how to do a fairly simple task, which is turning around a multicolored block with letters on it until the desired side faces up.

And they've compressed all of that training into a software program and then were able to transfer that over to the real world. Now, the reason that's a big deal is that the real world is very hard to model inside a computer. And usually when you try to simulate training in a computer and transfer it to the real world it doesn't work very well.

The way the researchers overcame that was by injecting a bunch of random noise into the computer simulation, essentially making the virtual world just as messy as the real world. So that the robot hand wouldn't be confused when it got to the real world. So what's next? Well, the researchers are doing very simple tasks right now, but in the future they want to do things like teach robots how to assemble electronics or even help humans with repetitive tasks like cleaning.
