>> The State versus Jake T Peterson, excuse me, Patterson.>> 21-year-old Jake Patterson appeared in a Barron, Wisconsin court room via video link on Monday after prosecutors said he confessed kidnapping 13-year-old Jayme Closs. According to court documents, Patterson admitted to picking out the girl at random after seeing her board a school bus last fall.
What followed was weeks of planning, in which police say Patterson checked out the Closs home twice, purchased a ski mask, and shaved his head to avoid leaving any hairs at the crime scene. Patterson is accused of holding Closs hostage for 88 days at his home after killing her parents in their home.
Prosecutors say he shot the teen's father first, then killed he mother after ordering her to duct tape the girl's mouth shut. Patterson then allegedly taped the teen's ankles, locked her in his trunk, and drove her to his home, passing squad cars with their sirens on that were responding to the shooting.
Authorities say Patterson kept Closs trapped under his bed for as much as 12 hours ar a time. Her disappearance led authorities and volunteers on a massive manhunt that involved some 2,000 community volunteers combing through fields looking for the girl. Closs managed to flee when Patterson was not home, and was found by a woman walking her dog.
Patterson faces murder and kidnapping charges, and up to life in prison if convicted, and his bail has been set at 5 million. He's due back in court on February 6th.>> Statutes, a class A felony.
