shares of Southwest Airlines under pressure Wednesday after the low cost carrier said it was investigating whether a conflict with its mechanics union was leading to a spike in flight cancellations southwest has scrapped hundreds of flights since February fifteenth due to a mixture of weather and unscheduled maintenance issues that have put an unprecedented number of aircraft out of service the company said it will investigate why the number of aircraft and able to fly had doubled in response the aircraft mechanics fraternal association which is in contract negotiations with the airline said that southwest linking of aircraft disruption to collective bargaining negotiations is quote simply an attempt to divert attention away from the airline safety issues this all comes as the airline on Wednesday cut its first quarter revenue forecast blaming a higher than expected hit from the recent US government shut down end week passenger bookings shares were down more than five percent on Wednesday afternoon meanwhile a flight cancellations by southwest continued on Wednesday according to FlightAware dot com southwest accounted for about twenty two percent of total cancellations across the United States
