allegations as described to Chicago police disputed reports that officers were investigating whether empire actor jussie Smollett staged a hate crime to keep his job on the hit TV show the openly gay African American actor told police two men assaulted him shouting racist and homophobic slurs and put a rope around his neck on a Chicago street in late January but a report Thursday by Chicago's ABC seven cited sources saying police were looking into whether small let and two men staged the attack because the actor was being written off empire is a victim so with Chicago police however said they have no evidence the attack was a hoax spokesman tweeted the network sources are quote uninformed and inaccurate empire producer twentieth century fox also disputed the theory issuing a statement the call the ideas Millette was being written off the show ridiculous in saying they stand behind him small it said in an interview with Good Morning America Thursday that he was angry that some people didn't believe his story and suggested the doubt might come from racial bias police have been unable to find surveillance footage of the alleged assault but are questioning two persons of interest seen on video in the area at the time their names have yet to be released but a lawyer for the men said they know smaller and I've worked with him on empire she said they do not know why they're being questioned
