>> A child was killed when a tree fell on a mobile home in Pensacola, Florida, Tuesday night as tropical storm Gordon came ashore. The storm weakened after making landfall just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border and lashed the US Gulf Coast with strong winds and heavy rain. At the height of the storm, Gordon packed 70-mile per hour winds, knocking out power to more than 35,000 homes and businesses.

By Wednesday morning, Gordon had weakened to a tropical depression as it moved across Central Mississippi. The name and age of the child who was killed was not immediately released. No other deaths or injuries were reported. Last year, hurricanes hit Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico, causing widespread damage and thousands of deaths.
