It's unclear what finally pushed Twitter, but the social media site on Thursday permanently banned US conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and his website, Info Wars, from it's platform and it's live video site, Periscope. Reuter's tech correspondent, Steven Nellis.>> Several weeks ago Apple, Facebook and Google all placed permanent bans on Alex Jones.

Twitter took a few days to follow up with what was only a temporary ban. It faced a lot of criticism including from it's own employees about the temporary nature of the ban. But now it's followed up and done a permanent ban.>> Jones is a highly controversial figure.

He's claimed that the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre was faked by left-wing forces in order to promote gun control. On Wednesday, Jones was in Washington for the Twitter hearings as a spectator, but quickly put himself in the limelight by heckling Rubio and also CNN reporter, Oliver Darcy.>> Large tech companies were often actually reluctant to ban people engaging in what was essentially political speech.

Specifically because they didn't want to appear biased in one direction or the other, so they were very careful. But after the 2016 election, and after the discovery that there had been interference in the election, the companies were much more aggressive in going after political speech. Especially when it violated their policies against things like harassment or abuse of other users.

>> The Twitter CEO defended his company Wednesday at the packed hearing, Republicans have accused Twitter of silencing conservatives. But Dorsey denied any attempt to target them or promote liberal views. Jones told Infowars that he was taken down because he tells the truth and dared to go to the hearing and stand up to Rubio and the mainstream media.
