>> Police have identified two officers killed on Friday morning in a shooting in the small city of Fredericton in eastern Canada early Friday morning.>> 45-year-old Lawrence Robert Costello, a 20-year veteran of the Fredericton Police Force, 43-year-old Sarah May Burns, has been on the force for two years.
>> Two civilians who have not been identified were also killed. A suspect who sustained serious injuries during the incident is now in custody. Fredericton's deputy police chief said that officers responded to reports of shots fired at around 7:10 AM.>> So upon arrival, they observed some individuals, the two victims, the civilian victims on the ground, and that's when they were shot.
>> Police then entered the apartment around 9:30 AM and arrested the 48-year-old suspect. The Fredericton shooting comes just three weeks after a gunman walked down a busy Toronto street, killing two people and wounding 13 others before taking his own life. A spate of recent shootings has sparked a debate in Canada about a weapons ban in cities.
Canada has strict gun laws, but a proliferation of weapons has led to an increase in gun-related crimes in recent years.
