>> Tributes are pouring in for former President George H W Bush, who died late Friday at the age of 94. Barack Obama saying that Bush's life was a testament to the notion that public service is a noble joyous calling. Bush's son, the 43rd President, said that he was the best dad a son or daughter could ask for.
He entered the White House with a resume few could top. It included congressman, UN ambassador, envoy to China, CIA Director, and two terms as Vice President under Ronald Reagan. As President George Herbert Walker Bush led coalition forces in the Gulf War after Iraq invaded Kuwait. His response won widespread support and prompted his approval ratings to skyrocket.
>> Tonight the Kuwaiti flag once again flies above the capital of the free and sovereign nation.>> But he stopped short of invading Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein, which some saw as unfinished business his son took up during his term. Bush Sr. also oversaw the end of the Cold War with the fall of the Berlin Wall coming down during his one and only term.
He later welcomed Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev to the White House.>> You and I must challenge history, make new strides, build a relationship of enduring cooperation.>> But in the end, it was the economy that did him in, it started with a pledge at the 1988 Republican National Convention.
>> To them, read my lips.>>
>> No more tax raises.>> But that was a promise he couldn't keep. He later raised taxes and then lost the 1992 Presidential race to Bill Clinton. Eight years later his son, George W Bush, succeeded Clinton as President. Making the two Bush's the second father and son duo ever to serve as US Presidents.
The Bush's tried to make it a hat trick with Jeb running for the White House in 2016, but his campaign was stopped cold by Donald Trump. Which didn't sit well with Bush Sr., who was quoted in a book calling Candidate Trump a blowhard. President Trump and the First Lady issued a statement early Saturday, praising Bush Sr.'s commitment to faith, family, and country.
Both plan to attend funeral services.
