Riot police charging in to break up demonstrations in the Spanish region of Catalonia on Monday night. Thousands marched through Barcelona to mark the first anniversary of a bid for independence. An ill-fated referendum on October the 1st last year hoped to establish a split from Spain. But Madrid banned the vote as anti-constitutional and imposed direct rule on Catalonia.
