Elon Musk revealed the identity of SpaceX's first private passenger to fly around the moon, a billionaire entrepreneur from Japan.>> I can tell you that I choose to go to the moon.>> Yusaku Maezawa made his fortune founding the popular Japanese shopping site ZozoTown and on Monday, he said next he wants to orbit the moon in this.
The system SpaceX calls the Big Falcon Rocket or BFR. The mission is planned for 2023.>> It's dangerous to be clear, this is dangerous. You have to be a very brave person to do that, this is no small matter.>> But before Maezawa makes his moon journey, there's the matter of Musk making the rocket on time.
Reuters Eric Johnson was at Monday's reveal.>> There were no specific mentions of Tesla or its production issues, or any of the drama around Musk's plans to take the company private, which he later scrapped. Nor the logistical issues that he mentioned recently, but that was definitely a major overhang in the room.
There are many questions about Musk's ability to deliver the rockets on time, he's got the BFR, plans to take the first passenger to the moon in 2023. He's also got the Falcon 9 programs, and a number of projects at the headquarters behind me that are underway every day that he's working toward.
>> Elon Musk has called the BFR the company's largest and most powerful rocket. Not only would he use it for moon tourism, he said he wants it for a crewed flight in 2024 to Mars. However, he may now face competition in the race for the red planet.>> I asked Elon Musk about Boeing's Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg, who said that the first humans will arrive on Mars carried by a Boeing rocket.
And he made muscular gestures and he said game on, and he got cheers and applause from the employees gathered in the room. And it was a really, really powerful moment because he loves the competition, he's fueled by it. He says we're going pedal to the metal and he believes that he's going to deliver on his promise.
>> As for what a ticket around the moon will cost Yusaku Maezawa, his lips were sealed. However, Musk says that the Japanese businessman will make a significant deposit that will help fund the BFR.
