wisconsin governor scott walker emerging as an early presidential favorite of the republican party's most conservative voters , i'm andy sullivan political correspondent for reuters here in washington our new poll finds that walker is a hit with the conservative voters who play a big role in the party's nominating process , that's enough to put him near the top of the republican field even though he does not score well with moderates walker will likely announce his run for the white house in july in strategists tell me he'll have to broaden his appeal fees going to ultimately capture the g. o. p. nomination but being a conservative hero is a good place to start though these voters only account for one in ten of all republicans they play a big role in primaries and caucuses , especially in early states like iowa walker once the support of twenty three percent of these voters that's tied with texas senator ted cruz another hero to the right but unlike crews walker also does well with a moderate to conservative voters who sit at the ideological center of the party this group is open to compromise on immigration and health care but among moderates walker is far back in the pack among all republicans he gets eleven percent good for third place behind jeb bush and mike huckabee walker supporters tell me they like how we refused to back down in his battles of labor union , home state , strategists say he could pick up more support among moderates in the months to come but some question whether he will hold up to scrutiny his stumbles over questions on religion in evolution haven't heard him much today but he could have less room to recover once voters start paying attention
