it's become a staple of the hillary clinton campaign stop when talking about communities and health she declares there's a quiet epidemic of substance abuse sweeping small town and rural america as well she is talking about the use of prescription pain killers and overdoses from them that kill an average of forty four people a day in the u. s. clinton says she decided to put the issue high on her agenda after meeting affected voters in april , but since declaring her candidacy she has not spoken about how painkiller overdoses killed two young men she knew won the son of a close friend eight here she said just last year and it came about because of a personal , connection with a , family that had a , tragedy referring to the death of twenty eight year old benjamin gupta , the son of businessman clinton family friend and political donor vinod gupta , nor does clinton mentioned her family's investment in the issue in twenty thirteen the clinton foundation set a goal to cut in half deaths from pain killer overdoses , vinod gupta alone pledging one million dollars to the program and in january the clinton foundation reached a deal with a company making an anti overdose medicine called evzio to sell it more cheaply to college campuses the centers for disease control says prescription pain medications have killed more than twenty two thousand people annually in recent years and says nearly two million americans were addicted to pain killers and twenty thirteen , clinton spokesman have declined to answer questions about her approach to the epidemic
