>> TESLA CEO Elon Musk on Thursday once again causing a stir on Twitter, where he recently taunted short sellers, then told disgruntled shareholders to go buy shares of Ford instead. Now Musk is teasing investors with major company news, and shareholders are happy to play along. Reuters correspondent Noel Randewich in San Francisco.
>> Tesla is surging again today. The reason for today's big jump is Elon Musk taking to Twitter to talk up his plans to launch commercial truck and eventually a pickup truck. In the past, Tesla shares have been sensitive to things that Elon Musk says on Twitter. So this is not the first time we've seen the stock moving based on tweets.
>> Musk tweeting, Tesla semi truck unveil set for September. Team has done an amazing job. Seriously next level. Later adding, pickup truck unveil in 18 to 24 months. Shares of Tesla already climbing 40% to record highs this year, briefly leapfrogging ahead of Detroit's General Motors this week to become the largest US car maker by market capitalization.
Even as Tesla produced less than 100,000 cars last year compared to GM's 10 million. The darling of Silicon Valley still has yet to turn a profit. As the company rushes to launch its mass-market Model 3 sedan later this year. And gears up for higher production targets by 2018.
