lter Scott died after being shot in the back by then police officer Michael Slager on April 4th, 2015. Scott was struck by five bullets. In a Charleston courtroom on Tuesday, Michael Slager finally pleaded guilty. Not to murder or manslaughter, but to a federal civil rights charge, abusing excessive force.

The guilty plea came as the result of a deal with prosecutors. It carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.>> And you have the love of God->> Walter's mother, Judy Scott, sees it as victory for her son.>> And I love my son, I miss him.

I miss him dearly, and I thank God for justice.>> 50-year-old Scott was unarmed and running away when Slager open fire after a traffic stop in North Charleston. In his initial murder trial last December, Slager testified that he felt total fear for his safety before shooting Scott. The trial ended with a hung jury.

Its members, 11 white and 1 black, unable to reach a unanimous verdict about whether Slager should be found guilty of murder or voluntary manslaughter.
