e Tomahawk missiles launched by US warships early Friday destroyed warplanes and damaged defense systems at the Shayrat Air Base near Homs, Syria. Satellite images released by the Pentagon showed what it said was the aftermath of the strikes. Senior US military officials confirm the attack destroyed up to 20 Syrian aircrafts, and damaged fuel sites in a surface to air missile system.
US President Donald Trump ordered the strikes in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack that he blamed on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.>>
> The Syrian army said the U.S. attack killed six people, calling it an act of blatant aggression. There was no independent confirmation of casualties.
The U.S. called the intervention a one-off intended to deter future chemical weapons attacks, but Syria ally, Russia, slamming the US. The attack now putting Washington and Moscow on opposite sides in the six year old conflict.
