The last step in a decision that would have broad implication for the global accord meant to combat climate change by cutting back on using fossil fuels. Key advisors to the President were set to convene at the White House to resolve an internal debate over pulling out of the deal which was signed during the Obama Administration.

Powerful conservatives in Washington and groups with ties to fossil fuels also pressuring Trump to keep his promise. US legal experts argue that the wording of the pact makes it impossible for Trump to stay in the agreement and at the same time carry out his pledge to bring back coal.
