>> They are affectionately named Apollo and Artemis, the most revered and powerful of Olympian deities. One, dazzling pink, the other, dazzling blue. These pear-shaped diamond earrings have been sold at auction for a record-breaking total of $57,425,000. Two lots at the Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels sale in Geneva.
>> I think what this shows is that for fine jewels, for exceptional stones, the market is still very strong. So I'm very pleased with tonight's sale, it was a lovely sale to take.>> The stones match each other in size, cut and tonality. Apollo almost 15 carats and Artemis 16.
They were being sold separately due to their extreme rarity but on Tuesday night they were bought by the same private buyer. Sotheby's said the two stones were by far the most important pair of earrings ever offered at auction.
