>> A 75 year old death row inmate executed by the state of Alabama, Friday. After facing seven previous execution dates, Tommy Arthur was put to death by lethal injection. There were no complications. Arthur spent more than three decades on death row after being convicted of killing his girlfriend's husband in 1982.
He was put to death shortly after the US Supreme Court lifted a stay on his execution. Arthur's lawyers argued the use of the drug Midazolam was unconstitutional. The sedative, the subject of several legal battles, for allegedly failing to relieve pain and leading to botched executions. Arthur's attorneys also questioned the legality of the state prohibiting a witness from having a cell phone to make a call if the execution went awry.
Arthur has always maintained his innocence with no physical evidence linking him to the murder. He was the first prisoner executed in Alabama this year.
