He was hospitalized earlier this month following surgery to relieve blood clotting on the brain.
Pictured here with other anti-apartheid leaders including Mandela in the Rivonia Trial in the 60s, Kathrada went on to be sentenced to life in jail and hard labor, together with Madiba and 6 others. He spent 26 years behind bars. Kathrada dedicated his life to fighting racial injustice, and many South Africans loved him for that.
Affectionately referred to as Uncle Kathy, his fighting spirit and political engagement were undaunted in his later years. He was one of the most senior ANC members to call on President Jacob Zuma to resign after allegations of corruption.>>
